The males are all black except for their colorful red and orange shoulder patches, quite a different looking animal this is an extreme case of sexual dimorphism. The species, whose common name obviously comes from the male, is found all around all the park’s water bodies. It’s a female red-winged blackbird, Agelaius phoeniceus. Looking somewhat like an overgrown, heavily streaked sparrow, this bird isn’t exactly rare, but you don’t run into one every day. My man Herman Melville would have included it in his “Whiteness of the Whale” chapter. The feathers do not seem to prevent pair bonding and breeding.Īpropos white feathers: I once saw a completely white European starling, at a bird rehab center in New Jersey. #Twobird in nyc update#UPDATE 5/5/11: this bird was feeding at least three nestlings today. (It’s an American robin because it’s not a European robin they don’t look much alike, but English settlers wanted to believe they were similar.) (This is technically different from albinism, which is an absence of melanin, and usually also includes the melanin in the eyes.) This bird, or one very like it, has been around the park for a couple of years now. This particular one stands out because it has a good amount of leucism, which is reduced and/or absence of pigmentation in the feathers. "Two Birds With the Wings of One" is to be repeated tonight, Wednesday and Friday.Near the dog bathing beach at the Upper Pool in Prospect Park, I found a couple of noteworthy birds the other day: The most common bird species in the park is surely the American robin, Turdus migratorius, which you can find on the meadows and in the woods and everywhere in between. The New York City Ballet season continues through June 25 at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center (212) 870-5570 or. The program began with Balanchine's "Donizetti Variations," neatly done by the corps, with Nikolaj Hübbe as the modest cavalier and Yvonne Borree sparkle-free as the lead woman.Įmil de Cou conducted the Donizetti neatly, and David Briskin, another guest conductor, handled the ever-fresh Bernstein score for "Fancy Free." Rebecca Krohn was the hot vamp at the end. #Twobird in nyc movie#Joaquin De Luz, Tyler Angle and Damian Woetzel were the sailors, each better than the last, while Amanda Hankes and Jenifer Ringer (who really did look like a 40's movie star) were swell as the two main women. The dancing and acting were just terrific. "Fancy Free," an ideal choice for Fleet Week with its tale of three sailors on shore leave in New York, looked positively contemporary in its sailor suits, and perfectly of its time with the women's snappy dresses and hairdos. #Twobird in nyc full#And the men in "Chi Lin's Dance," which is full of noisy percussion, looked improbably like Yuri Grigorovich's macho strutters in "Spartacus." Sylve, who danced coolly and statuesquely. #Twobird in nyc series#The nicest things in the ballet were Holly Hynes's Chinese-ish costumes, particularly a series of minidresses and minicoats for the leggy Ms. Sheng's musical fusion of East and West, he was subtle about it. Bonnefoux was trying to evoke Chinese dance, comparable to Mr. There were a lot of quick fade-outs, and the one at the end made the whole affair seem inconclusive. The rest of the dance offered two sextets, one male and one female, enabling the two lovers to unite (I guess). Bonnefoux began with Sofiane Sylve and Andrew Veyette (filling in for Sébastien Marcovici) alone he may have been dead already. The program includes a poem about two lovers who wish to be united in heaven, although the "Two Poems" texts seem more like sad musings, full of nature imagery. The ballet itself proved deeply mysterious, and not in a good way. Here he used old music, his "Two Poems From the Sung Dynasty" (1985), opulently sung by Lauren Flanigan and interspersed with "Chi Lin's Dance" from "Flute Moon" (1999). Sheng, who conducted his music, has been commissioned to provide two scores for the 20 seasons, presumably for Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon. Bonnefoux's ballet was the occasion for the public debut of Bright Sheng as the company's first composer in residence. The pleasure was a repertory performance of Jerome Robbins's "Fancy Free," from 1944. The news on Thursday night at the New York State Theater was Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux's "Two Birds With the Wings of One," the latest of the New York City Ballet's Diamond Project premieres.
